What you can pay with
AliExpress’s Commitment page names cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Maestro), digital wallets (PayPal, Google Pay and Apple Pay) and pay-later options (Klarna and Pay after Delivery). It adds that the methods available to you vary by country, region and currency. The detail below comes from third-party guides that checked checkouts, and they disagree in places. What your own checkout shows is the final word.
| Method | Availability | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Credit and debit cards | Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and American Express in most markets. Easync reports Discover is added for US accounts. | The only option Refundy calls universal. American Express is sometimes declined on cross-border orders. |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Selected markets. Easync says Apple Pay follows the Apple ecosystem, so expect it on iOS and Safari. | Refundy says the cost and refund speed follow the underlying card. |
| PayPal | Varies. AliExpress lists PayPal among its digital wallets but says availability depends on your country, region and currency. Refundy says it appears for some accounts and regions only. Easync lists many markets, including the US, UK and Germany, but says the list has changed more than once. A Reddit thread reports it disappearing for a buyer. | If it isn’t shown at checkout, no setting will switch it on. |
| Pay later | Klarna and PayPal Pay Later in the US and UK, Cash App Afterpay in the US and Clearpay in the UK, according to Easync. | Easync reports conditions such as a $30 or £30 minimum order for PayPal Pay Later, and a local mobile number and address for Klarna. |
| Local bank methods | iDEAL in the Netherlands, Pay By Bank in the UK, Bancontact in Belgium and BLIK in Poland, according to Easync. | Domestic only. Easync says they lack card-scheme chargeback rights, and Refundy says refunds can be the slowest, sometimes up to 20 business days. |
| AliExpress Pocket wallet | Most markets, according to Refundy. | Refunds to the wallet land almost immediately. |
Which payment method is safest?
Safety here means two things: how your money is held, and what you can do if an order goes wrong.
| If you want… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The strongest protection | A credit card, through AliExpress checkout. | You keep AliExpress Buyer Protection and add a card dispute right. In the US, the CFPB says to report a billing error to your card company within 60 days of the charge appearing on your statement. In the UK, MoneyHelper says Section 75 covers credit card purchases between £100 and £30,000, including overseas purchases. Buyer Protection details. |
| A decent second option | A debit card. | MoneyHelper says UK debit card chargeback claims must be made within 120 days of the purchase, but chargeback is a card-scheme process, not a legal right, and Section 75 doesn’t cover debit cards. |
| Speed and convenience | Apple Pay or Google Pay. | Refundy says cost and refund speed follow the underlying card, so the card behind it is what matters. |
| Spreading the cost | Think twice about pay later. | The US advocacy group NCLC says protections for buy-now-pay-later credit are now uncertain after the CFPB withdrew its interpretation that providers must give card-like dispute rights. A Reddit thread also reports AliExpress rejecting some pay-later services used through Apple or Google Pay. |
| No card at all | A local bank method or the Pocket wallet, if offered. | Expect slower refunds and no chargeback right on bank methods. |
Rules vary by country and by card. Check your card issuer’s terms. This is general information, not financial advice.
How your money is handled
- Escrow. Security.org and Surfshark describe AliExpress holding your payment and releasing it to the seller when the order completes. Confirming receipt early releases the money, so inspect the item first.
- Card security. Surfshark reports AliExpress complies with the PCI DSS card-data standard, and Wise says it uses 3D Secure for card payments. Surfshark still suggests monitoring statements and not saving your card on the site.
- Refunds. AliExpress says you can choose a refund to your AliExpress fast refund-bonus, subject to conditions, or to your original payment method. Refundy puts card refunds at 3 to 15 business days.
The costs hidden behind the price
| Cost | What happens | How to reduce it |
|---|---|---|
| Foreign transaction fee | Refundy says many card issuers add roughly 1% to 3% on cross-border purchases. | Check your card’s terms. Some travel and digital-first cards charge none. |
| Currency conversion | If checkout offers to bill you in your home currency, that is dynamic currency conversion. HSBC and American Express both say paying in the merchant’s currency usually gives a better rate than accepting the conversion at checkout. Refundy says AliExpress settles in the merchant’s currency, typically USD. | Choose the merchant’s currency (usually USD) rather than your home currency, unless the rate shown is clearly better. |
| Import duty and VAT | Separate from payment but landing on the same order. | Check the country guide: USA, UK, Canada, Australia. |
If your payment fails
This is short on purpose. Refundy lists the most common causes:
- Your bank blocked a cross-border charge. Calling your card issuer to approve the merchant usually fixes it.
- 3D Secure timed out. Retry with your banking app already open.
- Card, address or name mismatch. Enter the billing address exactly as your bank holds it. Prepaid and virtual cards are declined more often on cross-border orders.
- A risk check. New accounts and large first orders can trigger a review. If an order shows as pending, Refundy warns that paying again can create a duplicate charge.
Before you pay
- ☐ I’ve picked the payment method that gives me the most protection, ideally a credit card.
- ☐ I’m paying on the real AliExpress site or app, through checkout.
- ☐ I’ve chosen the merchant’s currency rather than my home currency, unless the home-currency rate is clearly better.
- ☐ I know my card’s foreign transaction fee.
- ☐ I’ve added shipping and import charges to the total.
- ☐ I’m not paying a seller who has asked me to pay elsewhere.
Ready to shop?
At checkout on AliExpress, look at which payment options your account shows and choose the merchant’s currency. If you want to try a new payment method, start with a small order. When you’re ready, check current prices and your total before you pay.

Frequently asked questions
Does AliExpress accept PayPal?
Sometimes. AliExpress lists PayPal among its wallets but says availability varies by country, region and currency. Third-party guides disagree on where, and reports say it has changed more than once. If PayPal doesn’t appear at checkout, it isn’t available for your account or order. A card is the reliable alternative.
Can I pay on AliExpress without a card?
Where local methods are supported, yes: options such as bank methods, pay-later services or the Pocket wallet appear depending on your country. Expect fewer protections and slower refunds than with a credit card.
Is it safe to save my card on AliExpress?
Surfshark says AliExpress uses standard encryption and secure processing, but suggests monitoring your statements and not saving your card on the site. Saving a card is a convenience choice, so weigh it against that advice.
Should I use pay later on AliExpress?
Only if you understand the provider’s terms. NCLC says US protections for pay-later credit are uncertain, and buyers report that AliExpress rejects some pay-later services used through Apple or Google Pay. A credit card usually gives clearer dispute rights.
The bottom line
Use a credit card through AliExpress checkout if you can. It works almost everywhere, and it stacks your card’s dispute rights on top of Buyer Protection. Treat PayPal, pay later and local bank methods as conditional extras that depend on your country. Pay in the merchant’s currency, check your card’s foreign fee, and add import charges before you decide whether the price is still good.
