What you may pay on an AliExpress order in the Netherlands
| Charge | What Dutch Customs says | Who collects it |
|---|---|---|
| VAT | The rate is usually 21%. For some products, such as books and magazines, it’s 9%. It’s calculated on the products, shipping, any insurance and the import duty. | The online shop at checkout, or your carrier before or on delivery. |
| Import duty (up to €150) | Since 1 July 2026, Customs charges €3 in import duty per product category on consignments worth up to and including €150. | The shop may pass it on at checkout. If not, you may pay the carrier. |
| Import duty (over €150) | A percentage rate applies, depending on the total costs, what the product is made of and where it comes from. | The carrier or the shop. |
| Handling costs | The carrier charges these for presenting your parcel to Customs. They are set by the carrier, not by Customs. | Your carrier. Ask it how much. |
Dutch Customs says it can’t tell you exactly what you’ll pay, because the costs depend on where the product comes from and what it’s made of.
How the €3 duty works
- Per product category, not per item. Dutch Customs says five USB cables ordered at once are one category, so €3. A pair of trousers and a jumper are two categories, so €6.
- What counts as a category. It depends on factors such as what a product is made of. A woollen jumper and a cotton jumper are different categories, per Customs.
- Who pays. The European Commission says the seller or importer declares and pays the duty. Dutch Customs says shops may pass it on to you. The EU rule in full.
- It doesn’t apply to everything. Dutch Customs says that if your parcel was already stored in the EU before you ordered, import duties don’t apply, though the price may be slightly higher.
- Ordered before 1 July. If your product enters the EU after 1 July, €3 per category is due. Ask the shop how it handles this.
- Until when. The Commission says the flat duty runs until 1 July 2028.
A worked example
This is an illustration built from Dutch Customs’ method, not a quote. Say you order a phone case (€6) and a cable (€4), with €3 shipping. They fall in two categories.
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| Goods and shipping | €13.00 |
| Import duty, 2 categories x €3 | €6.00 |
| VAT at 21% on €19.00 | €3.99 |
| Import charges before any handling fee | About €10 |
On a small order, the duty can be a large share of the price. A carrier’s handling fee, if charged, comes on top. The same method on Dutch Customs’ own example, a €4.95 USB cable with €3.80 shipping, gives €3 duty and €2.47 VAT.
If your order is over €150
Dutch Customs publishes a table of maximum duty rates for consignments above €150. VAT is 21% on all of these.
| Product | Import duty (over €150) | VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Smartphones, laptops, tablets, headphones | 0% | 21% |
| Toys | Up to 4.7% | 21% |
| Bags and suitcases | Up to 9.7% | 21% |
| Clothing | Up to 12% | 21% |
| Shoes and boots | Up to 17% | 21% |
| Jewellery, musical instruments | Up to 4% | 21% |
| Car and motorcycle parts | Up to 4.5% | 21% |
| Books and magazines | 0% | 9% |
Customs’ worked example: a €199 bag with €25 shipping and €10 insurance, at a 3% duty rate, means €7.02 duty and €50.61 VAT, €57.63 in total.
Returns and refunds of import charges
- Parcels under €150. Dutch Customs says if you return one, you don’t get back the VAT or import duty you paid, because the rules changed on 1 July 2026.
- Parcels over €150. Ask your carrier for a refund of the VAT or duty. It can ask Customs to invalidate the import declaration.
- Handling costs. Ask your carrier whether you can get these back.
That makes it worth checking an item before you buy. See AliExpress Buyer Protection for what AliExpress covers.
Watch out for fake payment requests
Dutch Customs says it doesn’t send payment requests. If you’re not sure a request is genuine, go directly to the website of your postal or courier company, not a link in a message.
Delivery to the Netherlands
- How long. Refundy, a cashback company, gives 2026 planning ranges of 12 to 22 days for standard shipping and 7 to 14 days for premium to Germany, France and the Netherlands. It calls the region generally fast and predictable. Shipping times in detail.
- Ships from the EU. Filtering for listings that ship from within the EU can avoid the €3 duty, per Dutch Customs, if the parcel was already stored in the EU before you ordered.

Payment and your rights
- Payment methods. Easync reports iDEAL is available for the Netherlands, but says bank methods lack card-scheme chargeback rights, and Refundy says refunds can be slowest, up to 20 business days. A credit card gives the most protection. Payment methods compared.
- Consumer rights. AliExpress cites a 2-year legal conformity warranty and a 14-day right to return in most EU countries. Check the current terms for your order. What’s covered.
- Fake goods and safety. The European Commission fined AliExpress €550 million under the Digital Services Act in July 2026, and its customs-reform page says over 60% of products checked in 2025 inspections failed EU standards. Is AliExpress legit?

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay customs on AliExpress orders in the Netherlands?
Yes. Since 1 July 2026, Dutch Customs charges €3 import duty per product category on consignments worth up to and including €150, plus VAT, usually 21%.
Is the €3 duty per item or per parcel?
Neither: it’s per product category. Dutch Customs says five USB cables are one category (€3), while trousers and a jumper are two (€6).
Who pays the €3 duty?
The European Commission says the seller or importer declares and pays it. Dutch Customs says shops may pass it on to you at checkout, and if not, you may pay the carrier.
Do I still pay if the parcel ships from within the EU?
Not the import duty, according to Dutch Customs, if the parcel was already stored in the EU before you ordered. VAT still applies to a purchase, and the price may be slightly higher.
Will I get import charges back if I return the parcel?
Not for parcels worth under €150, per Dutch Customs. For parcels over €150, ask your carrier to claim it back.
The bottom line
Expect 21% VAT and €3 in duty per product category on AliExpress orders to the Netherlands, with the shop or your carrier collecting it and possibly a handling fee on top. Count your categories, prefer listings that ship from within the EU, and check the total at checkout before you pay.
