Two questions hiding in “is AliExpress legit?”
People use “AliExpress” to mean three different things, and the answer changes for each one.
| What you’re judging | Legit? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The platform | Yes. It is an established marketplace owned by Alibaba, with Buyer Protection built into checkout. | That you are on the real AliExpress site or app, and paying through its checkout. |
| The seller | Varies. AliExpress hosts thousands of independent sellers, and quality differs from store to store. | Store age, feedback score and recent reviews, not the store name. |
| The listing | Varies. Photos and titles can overstate what ships. | Buyer photos, the exact variant you’re buying, and repeated complaints in low-star reviews. |
What the evidence says
Some of what you’ll read online is written to sell you a VPN or a dropshipping course. Here is what the official, regulator and independent sources say, and what buyers report.
| Source | What it says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| AliExpress Buyer Protection page (official) | Refund if your item doesn’t arrive, arrives damaged, or isn’t as described, within the protection period. | A real safety net, with conditions. See the next section. |
| European Commission (regulator, July 2026) | Fined AliExpress €550 million under the Digital Services Act for failing to diligently assess and reduce the risk of illegal, unsafe or counterfeit products, and ordered it to act. | The counterfeit and unsafe-product problem is officially recognised, not just internet gossip. The Commission’s own examples were counterfeit clothing, unsafe toys and dangerous cosmetics. |
| ITIF (US think tank, 2025 report) | Bought shoes sold as Brooks Ghost 15 for $78.48 against a $140 list price, from a store named “Brooks Authorized Store”. ITIF says a Brooks representative confirmed they did not appear authentic. AliExpress delisted the store after the report. | A brand name in a store title proves nothing, and a deep discount on a famous brand is a warning sign. This was one purchase, so it shows the pattern, not how often it happens. |
| FBI public service announcement (US government, 2025) | Warned that some China-made connected devices, including streaming devices, projectors, digital picture frames and car infotainment units, were infected before purchase or during setup. It did not name AliExpress. | Be extra careful with no-name electronics that sit on your home network. The FBI’s warning signs include unrecognisable brands and Android devices that aren’t Play Protect certified. |
| ACCC (Australian regulator) | Australian Consumer Law rights apply when buying from overseas businesses, but it can be difficult to get a repair, replacement or refund from one. | Prefer lower-value purchases, where a bad outcome costs little. |
| Trustpilot (customer reviews) | Rated 1.9 out of 5 from about 188,000 reviews. Common complaints: refund disputes, automated support replies, lost or badly delivered parcels, counterfeit or defective items and misleading listings. Positive reviews mention low prices, fast shipping and items arriving as expected. | Review sites attract people with a problem to report, so read the score as a measure of what goes wrong, not how often. The complaint list is still a useful map of the risks. |
What Buyer Protection covers, and what it doesn’t
| Situation | What AliExpress says | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Item doesn’t match the description or photos, arrives damaged or short | Eligible for a refund if you claim within 15 days of receiving the item. | Photograph the item and packaging when it arrives, so you have evidence ready. |
| Item doesn’t arrive or is lost in transit | Eligible within the guaranteed delivery window shown on your order details page. | The window differs by order. Check it before you buy, not after. |
| You changed your mind | You can return it, but you pay the return shipping. | For cheap items, the return cost can be more than the item is worth. |
| Categories outside the return policy | Underwear, socks, food, batteries, customised items and prohibited items. | Buy these from a local retailer if a return matters. |
| Your legal rights | AliExpress says Buyer Protection is in addition to your statutory rights. It cites, for example, a 2-year legal conformity warranty and a 14-day right to return in most EU countries. | The ACCC warns that enforcing rights against an overseas seller can be hard, so don’t rely on the law alone. |
What buyers report. Buyer Protection is a process, and the outcome depends on your evidence. Several Trustpilot reviewers describe disputes that needed repeated evidence submissions or ended with a coupon offer rather than a refund. Others call the refund policy decent. Treat these as reported experiences, not typical results, and keep your photos and messages.
Buyer Protection applies to orders paid through AliExpress checkout. A seller who asks you to pay elsewhere takes you outside the order, so there is nothing left for AliExpress to protect. Walk away. Full guide: deadlines, disputes and your other safety nets.
Which purchases are lower risk, and which need extra checks
This is our reading of the evidence above, not a test result.
| What you’re buying | Risk level | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Simple unbranded items: accessories, replacement parts, hobby tools, watch straps | Lower | Listing photos and buyer photos show what you get, and a miss costs little. |
| Famous-brand goods: sneakers, sportswear, luxury names | Higher | The ITIF purchase and the Commission’s findings both point at counterfeits. Assume fake unless the store is verified and the price is realistic. How to tell fake from real. |
| Electronics that run software and join your Wi-Fi: TV boxes, projectors, digital photo frames | Higher | The FBI’s warning covers exactly this kind of device. Stick to brands you can look up independently. |
| Children’s toys, cosmetics and skincare | Higher | The Commission named unsafe toys and dangerous cosmetics as examples of what it found. A local retailer or the brand’s verified store is the safer route. |
| Clothing and shoes | Medium | Usually legit, but sizing runs differently from US or European charts. Go by the seller’s measurements, not the size label. |
Brands that sell mainly on AliExpress and have an independent reputation are a different case from a famous brand at a huge discount. Our researched watch guides, San Martin watches and affordable homage watches, show that approach in practice.
The 60-second check before you order
- Read the low-star reviews for your exact variant first. One angry review is an isolated complaint. The same complaint in several reviews is a pattern.
- Open the buyer photos and compare them with the listing images. A busy listing with no buyer photos deserves caution.
- Check the store, not the store name. Look at store age and feedback score. Many buyers and dropshipping guides use roughly 95% positive feedback and at least a year of trading as a screen. That is a rule of thumb, not an AliExpress rule. “Official” or “Authorized” in a name proves nothing, as the ITIF example shows. A verified badge on the store page is a good sign to confirm, but we couldn’t verify AliExpress’s current badge criteria from an official source, so don’t treat it as proof. The full seller scorecard is here.
- Sanity-check the price against the normal retail price. A branded item at half price is a fake until proven otherwise.
- Look for the Choice label. It adds AliExpress-run delivery and return promises. How Choice works and when it’s worth it.
- Add up the real cost: item, shipping and import charges. Duties and VAT depend on where you live: USA, UK, Canada, Australia.
- Stay on the real site or app. Lookalike sites and links in messages are used for phishing. Type the address or use the official app.
- Start small. Make your first order a low-value item so you can see how the seller and delivery perform before a bigger purchase.
AliExpress or a local retailer: what you trade
| What you gain on AliExpress | What you give up |
|---|---|
| Lower prices, especially on unbranded and factory-direct goods. Cheaper shipping options are part of why. | Speed. Economy shipping is slower than a local courier. |
| A wide range, including niche parts a local shop doesn’t stock. | Easy returns. Change of mind means you pay return shipping, and enforcing local consumer law against an overseas seller is harder. |
| Small first orders that cost little to test. | Certainty on famous brands, which are the highest-risk category. |
If the price gap is small, or the item is a big-name brand, a safety-relevant product or something you need by a set date, the local retailer may be the better buy. If the gap is large on a simple unbranded item, AliExpress is a reasonable trade. Sometimes the right answer is not to buy it here.

Frequently asked questions
Is the AliExpress app safe?
Surfshark’s review found the official app safe when downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store, but it collects a fair amount of data, including contact details, device identifiers and purchase history. Check the permissions it asks for and only allow what you need.
Is my personal data safe with AliExpress?
Regulators have raised concerns. As summarised by Surfshark from news reports, South Korea’s privacy regulator fined AliExpress about ₩1.9 billion in 2024 over sharing Korean users’ data with overseas sellers without proper consent, and a privacy group filed a complaint in 2025 about EU users’ data going to China. Use a unique password and share only what checkout needs.
Is it safe to pay by card?
Security.org and Surfshark describe AliExpress checkout as using standard encryption and secure payment processing. Surfshark still suggests checking your statements and not saving your card on the site, and considering a wallet such as PayPal where it is offered.
The bottom line
AliExpress is legitimate, and millions of orders arrive without trouble. The risk isn’t the platform, it’s what you buy and who you buy it from. Pick simple, low-value, well-reviewed items, treat famous brands and connected electronics with suspicion, keep your evidence and pay only through checkout. If you decide it’s worth it, buy with the checklist in hand.
