The three labels, side by side
Sellers use these terms loosely, so what a listing says isn’t always what arrives. This table describes what the terms generally mean, based on the guides and forum posts listed at the end.
| Global Version | Global ROM | China version (CN ROM) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Sold by the brand for international markets | Usually a China-version phone flashed with global software by a reseller | Made for the China market |
| Hardware | Built for international networks and markets | Same hardware as the China version | Built for China |
| Network bands | Typically wider band support | May lack bands your carrier uses, because the radio hardware is unchanged | May have limited support outside China |
| Google services | Included | Included, if the ROM is set up properly | Usually not included |
| Software updates | Official updates | Depends on the ROM. A modified ROM may get none | Official China updates |
| Warranty | Manufacturer’s, where offered | May be void or unclear, so confirm with the seller | China-market warranty |
| Price | Highest | Middle | Lowest |
| Best for | Most buyers | Confident users who checked the bands | Advanced users |
Two cautions. First, the software you see isn’t the whole story, because the radio hardware inside a China phone stays the same after the software changes. Second, we couldn’t check any AliExpress listing directly, and this page can’t confirm what a specific seller ships.
Why the hardware matters more than the software
- Network bands. Vendor and enthusiast guides say China versions often lack LTE Band 20, which is used in Europe, and may have limited support outside China. Flashing software doesn’t add radio bands. Check your carrier’s bands against the phone’s spec before you buy. Spec checks for phones.
- Certification. XimiTime, a Xiaomi news site, says the CE logo on the back of a phone indicates a Global Version, while a clean back suggests a China or India model.
- Warranty. DesktopCoach, an independent tech site, says warranties on Global ROM phones can be voided and that manufacturer software and security support can be at risk. Confirm what the seller offers in writing.
The two kinds of Global ROM phone
An active member of the unofficial Xiaomi.eu forum describes two situations when a seller offers a China phone with a Global ROM. This is a forum opinion about Xiaomi phones, not an official statement.
- Unlocked bootloader with a Global ROM installed. The forum member says some apps that need device security, such as Google Pay, some banking and government apps, may not work, and that flashing carries a risk of bricking.
- Locked bootloader with a modified “fake” Global ROM. The same member says this means no updates.
Experiences differ. A commenter on XimiTime says their China-model phone runs official Global software with a re-locked bootloader, and that Google and banking apps work. One user’s report isn’t a guarantee, so ask the seller exactly what’s installed.
The Xiaomi.eu member also says Xiaomi has restricted unlocking the bootloader on China devices outside China, which can stop you from installing a different ROM yourself. We couldn’t verify that on an official Xiaomi page.
How to check which one you have
These checks come from XimiTime and apply to Xiaomi phones. Other brands use different codes, so check the brand’s own guidance too.
| Check | Global Version | China version |
|---|---|---|
| CE logo on the back | Present | Often absent |
| Model number suffix (Settings > About phone) | Ends in “G” | Ends in “C” |
| OS version code (letters before “XM”) | EU or MI | CN |
| IMEI check on Xiaomi’s official verification page | Shows a global region | Shows a China region |
XimiTime warns that if the model number ends in “C” but the software looks global, the seller may have flashed a modified ROM on a China phone. These checks work after the phone arrives. Before buying, ask the seller.
What to ask the seller before you pay
- Is this the official Global Version, or a China version with a Global ROM?
- What is the model number, and does it end in G or C?
- Is the ROM official or modified, and is the bootloader locked?
- Does it support my carrier’s bands? Give the seller your carrier and the bands it needs.
- Will the phone get official over-the-air updates?
- Is the manufacturer’s warranty valid, and who handles repairs?
Keep the answers as messages in AliExpress chat. A clear “official Global Version” in the listing that doesn’t match what arrives may be grounds for a not-as-described claim. Check the claim window.
Which should you buy?
| If you are… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Not technical, or want it to just work | Global Version | The fewest surprises on bands, updates and apps. |
| Price-sensitive and comfortable checking bands | Global ROM, with answers from the seller | You save money, but you take on the update and warranty risk. |
| An advanced user who wants early hardware | China version | You can handle Google services and bands yourself. |
| Using banking or payment apps on the phone | Global Version | Security checks can affect apps on modified software, per the forum reports. |
Before you pay: checklist
- ☐ I know if the listing says Global Version, Global ROM or CN, and what each means.
- ☐ I’ve checked my carrier’s bands against the phone’s spec.
- ☐ I’ve asked the seller about the ROM, the bootloader, updates and the warranty.
- ☐ I’ve read recent reviews from buyers in my country. Red flags.
- ☐ I’ve checked the store. How to judge a seller.
- ☐ I plan to check the model number and OS code on arrival, and keep evidence.
Ready to shop?
Once you know which type you want, open the phone listing on AliExpress, select your exact variant and read the description for the words Global Version, Global ROM or CN. Search AliExpress for the same model from a second seller to compare, and check the current price before you message the seller.

Frequently asked questions
Is Global ROM the same as Global Version?
No. A Global Version is sold by the brand for international markets. A Global ROM phone is usually a China-market phone with global software loaded by a reseller, according to DesktopCoach. Sellers often blur the two.
Will a Global ROM phone work on my network?
Not necessarily. Flashing software doesn’t change the radio hardware, so a China phone may lack bands your carrier uses, such as Band 20 in Europe. Check your carrier’s bands first.
Does a Global ROM phone get updates?
It depends on the ROM. A Xiaomi.eu forum member says a modified ROM on a locked phone gets no updates, and that an unlocked phone can have app-security problems. Ask the seller.
Can I turn a China version into a Global Version myself?
Some users flash global software, but it carries a risk of bricking, and one forum member says Xiaomi restricts bootloader unlocking on China devices outside China. We can’t recommend it.
How can I tell if I received the wrong version?
Check the CE logo, the model number suffix (G or C) and the OS version code in Settings, and for Xiaomi phones the official IMEI check. If it doesn’t match the listing, contact the seller and open a claim within the claim window.
The bottom line
Global Version is the safe choice, Global ROM is a cheaper compromise with risks, and the China version is for advanced users. Because sellers blur the labels, ask which one you’re getting, check your carrier’s bands, and verify the model number and software code as soon as the phone arrives.
